LightSquared Asks for, Receives Extension on Final Interference Report

With today’s (June 15) deadline looming over the critical Technical Working Group report on interference/overload of GPS receivers by the proposed LightSquared ancillary terrestrial signal, LightSquared has asked for a two-week extension.  Federal regulators have granted the extension  — according to one source, within five minutes of receiving the request — and the final report is now due on July 1.

Knowledgable observers speculated on this basis that the results of the investigation cannot be favorable to LightSquared’s case. More…

The National Center for Remote Sensing, Air and Space Law is pleased to announce a new, comprehensive website. As with its previous site,  the Center’s blog, Res Communis, and  all of its publications, including the Journal of Space Law back to 1973, are also accessible through the new site.

The new website also includes many new features. The most important of these is the Center’s Space Law Archive. Now, researchers can access the papers of early space law pioneers Andrew G. Haley, Eilene M. Galloway, and Stephen Gorove. Other new features include an Air and Space Law Calendar and a Did You Know? feature that serves up random important facts about air, remote sensing and space law.

Finally, the website is completely social network enabled with Digg, Facebook, Google, Myspace, StumbleUpon, Twitter, and many more options. We are offering this website to the community as a public service. If you have any ideas or comments about how to improve it for your use, please let us know.

“USAID congratulates the World Bank’s Board of Directors in making this important contribution to improving water resource and agricultural management in the MENA region,” said Chris Holmes, USAID’s Global Water Coordinator“The United States Government, through the State Department, NASA, and USAID, will be working closely with the World Bank to develop and apply remote sensing systems to improve water supply and food production in the MENA region”.

The project is the first under the recently launched Arab World Initiative—a World Bank Group partnership with the countries of the Arab world to foster effective cooperation and collaboration in the interest of economic integration and knowledge sharing. The project is also the first under a recent whole-of-government collaboration that the Memorandum of Understanding, recently signed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and World Bank Group President Robert Zoellick is intended to promote. Thales Alenia Space España is awarded contracts for European Earth Observation

(7 June 2011) Thales Alenia Space España has been awarded important contracts summing up to a value of more than 7.5 million Euros.

These contracts are for the MUSIS program for Earth observation. The company will be entrusted with the design, development, manufacturing, qualification, supply of electronics for the focal plane of the optical instrument (FPPB), and the service module (MSI) for the two first high optical resolution CSO satellites of the European MUSIS program, while having the option of a third one.

The Multinational Space-Based Imaging System (MUSIS) is a multinational program carried out by various European countries. The objective is to construct a common space infrastructure by combining national and/or bilateral programs, allowing the collaboration of these nations and providing them with the next-generation of European satellite intelligence systems, substituting their current national platforms. Through this, the contributing countries will reinforce their capacities and autonomy in the issue of surveillance, observation and reconnaissance. [Full story]

The House Appropriations Committee will mark up the FY2012 defense appropriations bill tomorrow (Tuesday, June 14) at 10:00 am.    If it adopts the recommendations of its defense subcommittee, it will be a mix of good and not so good news — mostly the latter — for the department’s space programs. The Secure World Foundation would like to invite you to attend a panel discussion marking the release of the 2011 Space Security Index (SSI). The SSI is an annual report that examines major space security events of the preceding year. This event will provide an overview of the SSI and feature a discussion on various issues that may affect space security over the coming year.

The event will be held on Wednesday, June 22nd, from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the Canadian Embassy, 501 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, DC 20001. It is open to the public, but RSVPs are required.
