In the wake of the Congressional Hearing on the space shuttle, it appears that two lawmakers are planning to introduce legislation that will keep the space shuttle program in operation until 2015. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) and Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) are reportedly preparing legislation that would keep the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) from being left on the ground. The AMS was dropped from the shuttle’s payload manifest.

Related to this, is the release of the text of a conference amendment by SpaceRef. The amendment introduced by Rep. Dave Weldon will require that NASA ensure that the shuttle operate beyond 2010. Unfortunately, Spaceref.com is not reporting what this text is to amend, and the reported source is no longer linked. There is no information on Weldon’s website.

  1. [...] Weldon ( as well as others) has been active recently with a conference amendment to keep the Shuttle Flying (Res Communis). [...]

  2. I strongly support your legislation to extend the space shuttle program. America can not go years without having our own way to space or the space station that we mostly built and paid for. This is a issue of national security and national pride. The space shuttle is awesome, our ‘next’ Apollo looking rockets are embarrassing. Please save the shuttle.
